Reason to start The Challenge

Started back at the gym a few months ago after a good 5 years of focusing on nothing but work...
Really enjoying the challenge of pushing myself in the gym again (it's boarder line therapy) and see the MAX'S Challenge as an excellent opportunity to take it to the next level.

What did you like most about The Challenge?

Having a designated goal and a community of like minded people around you to support and inspire you

What was the hardest thing about your Challenge?

around week 8 I found myself getting a little short with my temper however seeing the challenge tv segment for the week addressing the need to MAKE SURE you were ensuring your fat intake was being meet completely sorted the issue.

What impact has The Challenge had on your life?

A complete change!
After a 6 year hiatus I accepted an offer to get back into the fitness industry and I am now making a positive change in peoples lives. It's a great feeling waking up in the morning and knowing you're going to be doing something you really enjoy. My hunger for health related information is ravenous, I am currently studying sports nutrition whilst up-skilling my PT skills. It's a very busy time in my life but I would not have it any other way - easy when you love what you do!

What would you say to people who are thinking of doing The Challenge?

The support is awesome, be it the other people doing the challenge (Facebook, Instagram), the wealth of information on the website or the forum support, you really have an entire army of people either behind or beside you as you complete the challenge.

Anything else you would like to tell us about your Challenge?

I just want to thank Janet and John, all the ambassadors and all the admin behind the scenes. Thank you all for being there and providing such a great service.
I have a great time over the last 12 weeks, it has really changed my life (little emotional).

First day of the new plan and I felt like I was rushing with the 30 second rest breaks. I need to slow down the reps and continue to focus on the form. Got the weight for legs all dialled in so next session should be a bit smoother. Last point - there is nothing Sissy about the Sissy Squat, wow!

Man the days are going quick at the moment! Push day was good from memory, was a late day session so didn't have much in the tank but did what I could, felt it the next day... Sunday was great, took the family to Roma st park to do the amphitheatre steps, felt great being in the park pushing myself whilst the family played - great buzz. Saw today that the Max Challenge page posted tit on there Facebook page, that's 2 of my posts so far, real happy with that!

Last push day of the week 5 - 8. Shoulders felt the best they have the whole challenge which is good. Have been continuing to research technique and form and trying to stay true to it. About the only thing I was disappointed with today was the triceps, they were just wasted by the end of the session. Goal for the last 4 weeks: get the workouts done quicker.

Legs today. My range of motion on squats is getting really good. All the work I've been putting in on mobility has really paid off! Those goblet squat with calf stretch warm-ups... brilliant. Everything else was quite strong and stable. Went up in weight on most sets. Deadlifts felt good, will continue to ease the weight up. Will be 75kg next round. Actually will have to double check the next phase... think weights might drop a little due to restricted rest times?

HIIT training was running the amphitheater steps on a 2min work 2min rest basis, 8 rounds. I didn't do too bad (apparently), according to the trainer I was with. My recovery was pretty quick also so happy there.

Missed a couple of entries due to being pretty busy. Getting back into the fitness industry and hence doing first aid courses and heaps of study to get myself back up to scratch. The last few sessions I have dropped the weight back a little on some exercises (squats) and concentrated hard on form, still getting the challenge just better form and more range. A solid warm up on leg day has paid dividends as the squat is gaining a lot more depth. Was funny, during my last warm up I had one of the trainers approach me and ask if I'd be interested in being on his team for a challenge next year. He had noted how I warm up and train and thought I'd be a good fit, that was a cool buzz. If I wasn't changing Gyms I would have definitely considered it. Upper body is ticking along nicely. Tonight was the first night training at the new gym, equipment is a little dated but everything is there. Felt extremely drained today, short tempered and irritable. After seeing the week 8 update I found this is normal (how horrible) and to ensure I am getting the right amount of good fats (oils) that I need. Must admit, I have been holding back on them a bit of late. That's all changing now if it makes my mood better.

Learnt a VALUABLE lesson today, DO NOT INCREASE YOUR WEIGHT EXPONENTIALLY. When up 25kg on my deadlift last leg session for the last set. Tried to start at that weight can continue it through today and just wasted myself... killed the whole session, felt faint and couldn't complete. No idea why I thought I was He-Man, I go up gradually on all other exercises, why should this be any different? Will attack it next leg day at 70kg (5kg up from previous) and work from there. Didn't get to do the last superset of leg curls and KB swings or the calf raises, was going to head back this evening but was hit with a migraine. Going to take the hint from the body and give it a rest tonight... Have noticed a lot of weight dropping off me recently so thought i'd have a look at the scales, came up as 71.4kg - the lightest i've ever been...

Had to train late today as the daughter was sick and couldn't go to creche. Was real busy and had to mix up the order (and change from cables to DBs etc) a little but was all good, everyone happy and easy to work in with. Just not getting the wood chops, will research them a little more and keep trying. Leg raises are coming along slowly, gets to the point where I can raise them any further. I have just been smashing them with bench crunches after I fail the raises. Due to the late training I'll have to have my HIIT session tomorrow - Rest Day...

Push day was pretty solid, still a small amount of discomfort on a few exercises but on the whole a lot better. Slowed the bosu pushups down as recommended and it felt good, got out 3 x 12 and 1 x 11. Had to use the cables for flys and was pleasantly surprised, will continue to use if it's free. Upright row was strong, was able to drag out the last few reps and it felt real good. Have been changing up the tri extensions to find what feels best. Tried over head with cables which was good, will keep that. The current pull down involves bringing the rope out to the side at the bottom of the movement and I get a crazy burn but I feel my shoulders pulling forward... Did an additional round of reps at 12 then 10 at heavier weight and no ropes to the side, this felt good but of coarse it did not have the extended range of motion... Have a session booked in on Tuesday to look at my rotators and squat form.

Great leg day today. Spent a fair bit of time warming up including some deep goblet squats focusing on stretching out my right calf. Got good and deep on the squats - felt good Added 25kg to the dead lift - out of control! grip strength has kicked in everything thing else felt strong solid. Awesome day!

Purchased a subscription to muscles in motion to help with my form, very handy. Feeling stronger and more comfortable with the new plan. Not getting much out of the leg raises, will continue to include them but just smash myself after with additional ab work. Pushed hard through a few of the sets, surprising myself by getting the full set with good form. Have adopted a strategy of drop setting, found I peter out towards the end of the sets and just can't get the last few reps. This way I can still push through to the end with good form and crazy burn. Returned to the gym this evening to do a HIIT session - Tabata sets. Hit out 4 rounds (sprint, battle ropes, bench crunches, KB swings), contemplated leaving but didn't feel I'd pushed hard enough, went back upstairs and did a round on the bike, worth it.

Went into the gym today a little tired, skulled the betapump with the vaso-d and just got stuck in. Had a plan to really concentrate on form and changed the rotator warm up a touch to focus more on the position I need to hold during lifting and all this seemed to pay off. Kept the shoulder blades back and down, swapped out DB flys with Fly machine and did not have the pain at the end of the session that I have been experiencing after the last 2 push sessions. Definitely getting a bit more symmetry regarding the traps which is good to see (all the work is paying off). Also a lot more conscious of what my body is doing through movements, if things are getting ugly I drop the weight back a touch and push out extra reps if required. Feeling on track.

Was up at 4am this morning to get a Cardio session in. Flexibility regarding legs is slowly increasing, all the warm up work I'm doing is starting to pay dividends. Will just keep chipping away at it. Have dropped the weight back a couple of KG on the Squat to focus on form and a continuous set of 12, added a little more weight to the bar on the last set to make sure I was working. Dead lifts felt ok, not as light headed on them today, missed getting to 12 on one set, will go up a little on weight next round. Leg curls jumped up in weight, I was a little surprised. Have also added gone up to 24kg on the KB swing - feels good. Ganglion in wrist starting to ache a little, will look at getting it removed once the challenge is complete. The Max Challenge posted my 4 week progress pic on their pages today, it was a really nice 'pick me up' for the day.

Pull day felt good, shoulder joints were a little rough to begin with came right. Good to feel the different muscle work throughout the various movements, get a crazy pump on the bicep curls. Overall getting a little 'veiny' on the upper body days, good buzz. Abs are coming along, the wood chops are fine, did a little reserch on the hanging leg raises regarding grip and it paid off, got through a couple of full sets before the grip strength gave out. If they aren't smashed by the end of the session there are now getting a little more attention to make sure there's a solid burn!

Have found that the push day really aggravates my shoulder joints... Have been doing a lot of work warming up my rotator cuffs prior to any gym work buy it doesn't seem to be doing much to protect them from the pain I get during and post work out? By the end of the pull day they are feeling fine again which to me says I need to concentrate on getting those muscles in my back stronger to pull everything back in line where it should be. Might be time to get some professional advice. Did a second session at the gym to incorporate the required HIIT session, it involved 1/ treadmill sprints in a 400m - 300m - 200m - 100m format (sprint, minimal rest, sprint), 2/ Tabata push ups 3/ Tabata bike sprints 4/ Tabata Swiss Ball prone hold Felt good to shack things up with the Tabata sets, will definitely keep these in the mix

Adjusted the rest time to 60 seconds today instead of the 2 minutes I was on. Went quite well, in all honesty some of the rests prob went out to 80 seconds. Had a solid warm up stretch session that really increased my range of motion. Another guy was using the belt so had to go without whilst doing squats, got it back on for dead lifts and KB swing. Finally feeling comfortable with my form on the KB swings. Felt quite light headed during the dead lifts will check in the forum if anyone else is experiencing similar faintness... Had to have a good roll on my right glute after the session as it was a bit sore, sore some good stretches/mobilisation movements for the glutes on instagram so will incorporate these into my stretch days. Been a lot hungrier over the last couple of days compared to usual, i'm guessing it's due to the cut back in carbs like oats and rice. Looking forward to the next couple sessions, push and pull. Need to throw a HIIT session in somewhere also? Will see how we go...

Rest day today, just went in for a roll and stretch, knees felt soooo much better afterwards. Calfs were super sore in places, got a couple of releases on other muscles. Glad I didn't train today, felt like I needed it, even had a little nap on the floor today. Couldn't do vege sticks as a snack today, grabbed a shred system cookie instead. Have started limiting the amount of almond milk that goes into my coffees, more of a 'colouring' of milk now. Roll on Leg Day tomorrow!

Pull day was ok, was pretty buggered I assume from all the walking to and from the day care centre. More of a feeling out day, still felt pretty good. Feel im taking too long in the gym so going to cut the rest time in half to 1 minute and see how I go... Shoulders were a little sore today (day after) but feeling ok now.

    9:40 PM

Busy day with walking my daughter to day care (6km there and back) this morning then getting stuck into the push phase. Found it pretty good, chest felt good after the bench press. Was surprised to find I was able to push out 70kg, happy. Shoulders felt a bit funky through some of the movements, will monitor (as usual). Need to build a little stability strength with some of the movements, which will come. Foot felt fine this morning, which was also surprising. Even did a little jogging whilst pushing the stroller and no issues. Hopefully it was just 'rust'. Ganglion in wrist isn't getting any smaller, if I get any drama from it I'll just modify the plan to suit - nothing is happening (surgery) between now and the end of the challenge.

First day of new 4 week block. Had my little girl in the creche which was a little distracting as she has been quite clingy lately so had to keep checking on her to make sure she wasn't screaming the house down... Managed to get the full plan in, felt good. Good to be back doing full range dead lifts again, a few muscles there that need to sort it out but shouldn't be an issue. As with any new exercises there were a few weak spots and the body does feel like its getting rid of a bit of 'rust' (developed a sore top of the right foot this afternoon - will monitor) but on the whole pretty happy with how it went - considering. KB swings felt form correct, dropped the weight back to concentrate on form and I feel I've got it dialled in. No idea how people are getting the whole session done in an hour? I'm an hour and a half pushing it, and that's without stretching and warm up done at the gym... Pushed the stroller to the pak and back today for something different, was cool hanging out with the little girl. No baby tomorrow so can concentrate solely on the new workout, should be good. No baby

Last of the AB/Cardio session Yesterday, wasn't too bad a run. Have made some good progress over the last 4 weeks, can run 800m at pretty good pace, side planks are at 1min 30sec, 10kg russian twists feel pretty good and even increased the resistance level on the XTrainer - pretty sure it can increase a bit more this week also. All and all pretty good.

Upper body today (did a 20min cardio hit first thing in the morning before breakfast also). Had a solid warm up of the rotators, I feel like I'm going through stages with them. As a whole they seem to be getting better but I get different twinges in them every now and then. Feeling a lot stronger and continuing to add weight to the various exercises, form is feeling solid and I am feeling confident about the next 4 week block as well as the other 4 after that. If I keep going the way I am I'm sure I can make the top 10 for the competition.

Yesterday was just a roll and stretch day. Have upgraded to the knobbly roller, man it gets in there... The stretches are feeling good, feels like they are making a difference. Ended up going for a lite jog in the evening, wasn't planned, I had to head to the supermarket so jogged up there and once I got back decided to head back out for jog around the block. Have no idea where I was at the time but eventually got back onto a street I was familiar with and made my way home. Felt good for it too.

Tuesdays upper body session was ok, had a good rotator warm up. Still feeling a little discomfort in the shoulder during DB press, nothing that stops the movement so will continue and monitor. Let the weight go a little too fast on the DB row which didn't feel too good but feels fine today (Wednesday). All other exercises went relatively smooth, wasn't hitting the 15 mark on a few but got a good pump on, may drop weight if needed to make sure I get that 15. Altered the high rope pull, added a touch of upwards rotation - felt good. Did cable tricep extensions as the bench where I do overhead extensions was being used, felt better to be honest... Speaking with a guy who I've gotten friendly with and he noted I'm starting to show definition, which I was pleased to hear. Keen to see how the next 4 weeks are structured, ready to change it up.

Had a bit of a social day yesterday so got to the gym a little later in the day (1530). After finding I was doing the SB prone hold the wrong way round I have the found it a lot more challenging. I was getting to around 50 seconds on average before failure, from there i'd do my best to reset and hold out for the remaining 30 seconds. Treadmill sprints are up to 700m which feels ok. Side planks have a lot of strength, can hold the full 80sec. Staying away from the stationary bike to save my hip flexors from tightening up so 30sec sprints were also done on the treadmill. 1st sprint done at speed 20 with 0 incline - easy, 2nd sprint speed 20 done at max incline - could hold until the 20sec mark then had to brace on the machine to finish off, 3rd sprint speed 20 with incline 5 - able to hold the full 30 sec but was challenging. Will start at incline 10 this week and assess from there. Ab machine felt way too easy at the previous weight, trialled a few different ab exercises to see if anything else felt better but in the end just up'd the weight to 54 (from 36), this felt better. Russian twist even felt a little lite, when from 5kg to 6kg and then grabbed a 10kg and did a forth set, will stay with 10kg from now on. The Xtrainer at the end of the session got a good sweat up.

Had 2 sessions yesterday. 1 upper body and 1 cardio. Upper body was good, up'd the weight on nearly all exercises and focused heavily on form. Need to find a new Tricep exercise, have reached the limit on seated behind the head extentions. Tried dips but they aggravate my shoulder... Cardio was good, used the Xtrainer instead of the bike (found i was getting a bit tight in the hip flexors) and found it surprisingly challenging which was nice.

Got a solid 7 hours of uninterrupted sleep last night and then an additional hour on top of that - was great. Felt good at the gym and went up in weights on squats, dead lifts, leg extension and curls. Got 3 x 20 reps out on lunges for the first time as well. Got a tip on leg extensions with pointing toes, took it on board, introduced myself, nice enough guys, got some positive feed back, felt good. Grip strength on dead lifts held well. KB swings went to 20kg, think I need to get a little more use to the movement but it felt ok, will keep working on in. Did my warm up exercise and the hip flexors weren't too bad, had a roll after the upper leg work and they felt pretty good.

Upper body this afternoon, gym was nice and quiet. Did a good warm up on the rotators that felt pretty good, it's going to be routine now. Went up on weight on DB press, BB incline and high rope pull. Leaning more towards Vaso-D over intraboost during workouts, intraboost works well for my cardio but don't get the same feel during workouts. Will give it the rest of the week but thinking i'll be changing back come next week. Went back this evening to hit out a 20min peak and trough session on the bike, ran into Jodie and had a chat, getting to know a few of the trainers there now, it's a good friendly gym, nice buzz walking in and saying hi and having a chat. Knees have been a little tender over the last few days so did a bit of a stretch session after the bike and it made quite a substantial difference, guess that's staying in the routine now too..

Definitely prefer morning/midday training to evening but hey, gotta take what you can get sometimes. Dead lifts are still suffering with the lack of grip strength, 1 set only getting out 5 reps... From now on I'm going to ensure my hands are set right and just commit or drop the bar. I can get the 15 out, just need to sort it out! KB swings were good, the session with Jodie definitely gave me some excellent pointers, going to kick the weight up to 20kg on my next session. Almost rolled my ankle on on the walking lunges, managed to pull it back which surprised me, must have built some good strength/stability down there. Would not have been able to do that a few months ago so happy about that!

Well, after a weekend of camping I whole heartedly understand the importance of a good night sleep... Our little girl was useless at sleeping while away and as a result we suffered terrible sleep. Trained hard Friday before we left and got a crazy pump on which was cool. Will have to see if I get a similar pump this week without the Vaso-D? Also got some form pointers from one of the pts at the gym (paid session) which was really good. I have a few warm up exercises to add to the routine now. Saturday was a write off due to lack of sleep so nothing to report there. Used the local gym in rainbow beach to do my abs/cardio, didnt feel to flash going into it but felt real good once finished. Training late afternoon today - will see how we go...

20 minute peak and trough training on the bike today, was good having the intraboost to sip on throughout - will keep that up. Rotator cuff work felt good, amazing how much difference a few specific movements can make to reduce tenderness... Read a short snippet on the maxs page today about how carbs after training can help with recovery, will definitely be adding to / structuring the diet.

Wasn't really feeling it yesterday... not sure if I pushed too hard on legs the day before or what? Went up in weight on a few of the exercises and tweaked the Tricep work to make it a bit more user friendly (used 20kg weight for seated overhead extention as opposed to the DB I was using - little easier getting it into position and feels more fluid throughout movement). Shoulders still have a little discomfort but I reckon the rotator cuff work I'm doing is definately helping. Had a nice comment from the wife last night, "you're starting to look really good". That was cool, I'm feeling good. My reply was "give me 10 weeks". Feeling on track!

Hit legs today, tried stacking my BetaPump with Vaso-D... BANG! Kicked in pretty well, definitely didn't need Intraboost half way through, was still coming down a good hour or so after getting back from the gym. Will crank it again tomorrow (minus the intraboost). The pump in the legs from the Vaso-D was pretty full on so looking forward to feeling the effects on the upper body tomorrow to be honest. Finally got out 3 x 15 set on the dead lift, have changed to an alternate grip on the bar and it has made all the difference. Flexibility has also improved and i'm getting more depth which is feeling really good! Really enjoying the challenge so far, good support network and community online, focused in the gym and enjoying the feeling of accomplishment after each session.

Good roll and stretch session yesterday, continued the rotator work also - shoulders feeling good for it. Slept terribly Saturday night, heat and eating late maybe the cause? Changed eating times to ensure there's a couple of hours between eating and bed. Also jammed the aircon up. As a result I did sleep a lot enter last night - I definately needed it. Trying a Vaso-D and BetaPump stack today for legs... have had good results with both separately so will be interesting to see them preform as a combo. Found a mix of motivational snippets on Spotify and have mixed them into my workout Playlist, nice change, helps with focus on those last few reps.

Upper was pretty good yesterday, will have to go up in weight next week. Have been finding that I'm fading towards the 10 to 12 Rep range of some sets so tried count 3 lots of 5 instead, which surprisingly helped (little bit of self psychology...?). Shoulder still a little tender, trying to not sleep with it under my head at night to see if that helps (doesn't feel too bad this morning). Will continue the rotator exercises on my rest days and monitor.

Leg day was good yesterday, grips strength still an issue. Trialed an opposing grip which felt ok, also talked with a guy who uses straps every now and then, said they are pretty good but won't help the building grip strength too much... Was tight at the top of my quad during lunges, had to have a bit of an additional stretch mid workout, also had another one last night before bed. Ended up taking the carbs out of my dinner meal opting for just a chicken and vege stir fry, was just as satisfying.

No weights yesterday so just jumped on the roller and had a good stretch. Was surprised that my calves didn't have more 'knots' to be honest. Hamies were definately tender... Changed the large salad for dinner to the equivalent amount of fresh herbs and made a 'pesto' to go with the fish, was nice. Missed the feeling of pushing myself at the gym, might look at throwing a single tabata session in on the rest day if I feel like I need it.

Good session yesterday (upper), starting to recognize the regulars and saying hi where applicable. Weight is pretty much where it needs to be. Weights during morning and went back in the afternoon to kickout the interval training (20 min peak and troughs), got a good sweat up. Have decided to incorporate the use of Vaso-D with the cardio since it's a twice day training setup - beta pump and intra boost for weights in morning and Vaso-D in the afternoon for cardio. Will see how it goes... This also allows me to get in another dose of the gear. After cardio I did a little rotator cuff work, which seems to be paying off (less / no pain on top of shoulder). Saw pasta as the carb for dinner last night so sacrificed 1 cup of the steamed vege for a cup of fresh tomatoes and herbs and made a nice pasta sauce with a portion of lean mince and cup of courgette and aubergine - pretty tasty.

Grip strength let me down on my dead lifts today. Will just have to build on it I guess... The rest of the workout was good with some increases in weight from last weeks trial run so happy about that. Feel somewhat faint when doing squats, will research possible cause (low blood pressure maybe) and hopefully sort it. Food volume is good, only felt hungry once. Wasn't completely sure about the cardio side of things so looked through the forums and found an explanation that helped. Will try and read up on it a little more tomorrow to make it completely clear. Roll on day 2.
