Reason to start The Challenge

I am slightly embarrassed to say but I have done this challenge last year as well. I did pretty well and finished in the top 50.

After the challenge everything went well with my nutrition and exercise until mid January. I received one of the worst possible calls 2am in the morning from my brother overseas. The news was bad, they unexpectedly discovered that my Mom had stage 4+ pancreatic cancer. Doctors only gave her 2-4 months to live.

I was devastated, I flew to South Africa to spend time with my Mom. Her condition got worse by the day. She passed away in our arms beginning of May. I have never been through anything like this in my life, I am still unbelievably sad. I am struggling to move on after my Moms death.

My life has been a mess since January, I picked so much weight as a result, I just couldn't focus on anything but my mom. Food became my sanctuary, it made me feel good for a short time. I picked up almost 12kg since then.

This has had such negative impact on my life on all fronts.I worked so hard last year to get back into shape, now I have lost it all. I am down in a hole at the moment and I need to get out. I know that the Max's challenge helped me last year, I cannot think of a reason why Max's challenge won't help me get back on track this year.

I am not even more motivated and determined to achieve even better results than last year.

I am feeling a bit positive ever since I spoke to my wife and told her that I want to do the challenge again, she is backing me 100%. She knows how important it is for me to be fit and healthy.

What did you like most about The Challenge?

This challenge helped me to refocus and stay focused over the past 12 weeks. I managed to get my health back. Just before the challenge started, think in July, I watched a Muscle TV episode where mind coach Craig Harper explained what the difference is between motivation and commitment. This made me think allot, I came to the realisation that I have had plenty of short terms of high motivation levels but obviously have failed dismally with commitment to my health and fitness. This put things into perspective for me and the rest is history. For once in my life I can honestly say that I have commitment. There was many occasions ( travelling, back injury, sleep deprivation etc) whereby I could easily have missed a training session or cheated on my meals during this period. Not once have I lost focus, I found a solution to overcome that hurdle on every occasion. That made me proud and proofed to myself that I have changed from being motivated to totally committed.

The other thing I liked allot was the very helpful Muscle up challenge website. There was a few occasion during the challenge where I had supplement related questions. I asked for clarification and received feedback almost immediately . I was very impressed. I also enjoyed reading forum topics, this was great as I was learning from others experiences on a daily basis.

The format of having different checkin points to measure your progress was great too. I couldn't believe 1. How bad my fitness was on day one and 2. How dramatic my fitness improvement. This was evident by looking at my progress photos and fitness tests.

What was the hardest thing about your Challenge?

Making the decision to go for it again, was most probably the most difficult decision. It took me at least a couple of weeks to think about the challenge as I have done this before. I was angry with myself to be in this predicament again. I had to make piece with myself first. Yes there was allot of questions I had like "Why did let yourself go again? "why have you done this to yourself again?" .

Yes, I have gone through a very difficult time emotionally from January when I got the news that my mom was suddenly diagnosed with a rare form of cancer and that there was nothing they could do for her. After she passed away early May in our arms, things just got worst for me as I was struggling to deal with her death. The weight was just pilling up on a daily basis. I had almost no clothes left to wear as nothing would fit me anymore. I do not show emotion often,I definitely struggled dealing with my moms passing. I am convinced that I wouldn't be able to get back on tract if it wasn't for the opportunity that the Muscle up challenge gave me.

Another big obstacle for me was the lower back injury that I picked up in the first month of the challenge when I was doing seated legs press. It was so bad that I couldn't sleep or get out of bed. I lived on pain killers for over a month. But, I was convinced that if I stay committed and work around the injury in the gym I would still be able to succeed. As time went on and rising pressure from my wife to seek medical attention the injury started to improve. I haven't had to drink any pain medication for 4 weeks now. I feel allot better.

What impact has The Challenge had on your life?

I am extremely positive today. Life is enjoyable. Emotionally I feel tons better than before. During the challenge we found out that we will become parents again in early April. This challenge couldn't come over my path at a better time as finding out that I will be a Daddy again just emphasised to me how important it is to be healthy for you kids. All I want to be in life is an example to then. Even my daughter Kiara which is 2 and a half now is doing baby push ups and sit-ups as she is trying to mimic me...it's so cute.

What would you say to people who are thinking of doing The Challenge?

It doesn't matter what your situation, condition or mental state is in life, you can overcome it if you want to. We all have problems and a long list of reasons why we cannot succeed. Do yourself a favour, sit back and evaluate your life and ask yourself some honest and serious questions. If you are unhappy with where you are at in your life and you would like to make a positive change, make the decision and go for this challenge. Your life will change in 3 months guaranteed!

It's okay to fail sometimes. I have been in good shape before and have done such challenges before but have let myself go for various reasons after each challenge. As long as you make piece with your previous failures and focus on changing your life in a positive way you are almost there. Make time to think about why you have failed before, if you know the reasons you can work on those aspects of your life and improve.

When you join this challenge you are not alone. You have a massive support base in the Muscle-up Challenge team that will help you to succeed.

Anything else you would like to tell us about your Challenge?

I have an abnormal left kidney since the age of 2 yrs. It only functions about 35% compared to a normal kidney. For this reason I am prone to get kidney stones on a regular basis if I am not carefully of my diet.

I used creatine before when I was younger on a few occasions, but every time I used it I would end up in hospital with kidney stones. The same counts for the use of Protein supplements. Too much and I am in hospital. So, I have to be very careful.

I made the decision to try Max's Crea8 and I used 3-4 Protein shakes (super shred & night time) for the entire challenge. I only stopped the Crea8 two weeks ago. But I am extremely happy to say that I have had NO side effects or any kidney stone to date. This is huge for me as this has never happened before. I am more than ever convinced that Max's products are of extremely high quality compared to other suppliers. The ability for me to use these supplements throughout the challenge made a huge difference in my physical results.

What an awesome day it was. I started of getting a tan. Weird experience but worth it. We then took some shots of me trying my best to do different poses. I also bought a newspaper, still need to take the newspaper shot as well. I can't believe the burn you get when you flex you muscles for a long time. I feel a bit exhausted after all if that, but its been a great experience. Mmm, not sure if I should wait before uploading my foto's. Maybe I'll do that with my final challenge upload. Luckily I still have time. I will weigh myself tomorrow as its the official last day. we finished the day with a barbie at our place with some great friends..... And I had a nice piece of desserts as a treat For . Think I deserved that after being super strict with my diet the past A12 weeks.

I will also try and get a fat% measurement done tomorrow. I have never done that so that will be great to see where I am at. I feel great. there will be no stopping after this weekend. I am more than ever committed to continue my exercise and healthy eating program going forward. I will have to go and spend some time in the shops thoug, because pretty much all the pants that I own is way too big for me know. I dropped from a 38inc to a 32inch.....yip believe it.

Arms with a good cardio workout early this morning. I have been doing super sets for the past 2 weeks. There is definitely less energy in my body. I put it down to the fact that I am consuming less carbs than usual and I stopped Crea8 over a week ago. I have had bit more carbs yesterday to help with this. Must say I felt bit better this morning. Having a long black now, then off to work again.

There is 2 weeks to go...... I fell on top of the world. Tommorrow morning is chest and shoulder day. There ia a possibility that one if my friends will join me which will help allot with getting to spot me. Its also a big day tomorrow as I am stopping my Crea8 usage tomorrow to get rid of any water. Week 9 check-in. My current weight is 93. 4kg what an amazing week! I have pushed it really hard all week and have increased my intensity levels in the gym. I am feeling so pumped its, unreal! I have aver contacted the forum experts regarding when to stop using Cre8 and I recieved a quick response. So, I will continue with it for another 2 weeks before I stop using it in the last week. The other good news is that my lower back is coping well and there is a definite improvement of late. I had a great weekend as well with a round of golf with a good mate on Saturday morning followed by an amazing Fireworks show at the Brisbane River Fire. The he coming week will be a bit more challenging as I am travelling to Townsville on business from tomorrow to late Tuesday. It's amazing how quickly you get a response from the muscle up coaches. I asked a question late last night and this morning I had an answer, that is awesome! As per their suggestion I will continue to use cre8 until the last 5 days. I am feeling unbelievable , mentally and physically. My appearance have changed so much. The other good news is that I haven't had to dring any pain medication for my lower back for 2 weeks now. My strategy to work around exercises that impact my lower back has really helped. I am hopeful that the injury will heal more and more in the future. I just need to make sure I don't put unnecessary pressure on it. I am am plying golf tomorrow , looking forward to it and then me and the family are going to the amazing River Fire in Brisbane. Exiting weekend ahead.

Week 7 check-in. I had a good week. The big difference between the past week and the previous week was that I did't do spinning on Thursday. I did an extended cardio session with some weight training added on stead. This was changed due to my back pain. It did work a bit I must say, my back is still flairing up by its not as bad a the previous week . my current weight is 96. 3kg . This is coming week will be my biggest challenge as I am flying to Armidale on a business trip until Wednesday. I have already packed 8 small containers with my super shred and niter one protein to take with, oh and don't forget the crea8 carnage as we'll, that's in too. I will google for a gym there and make a point to get there.

Did 28km in the spinning class today. Burnt 647cals. I do have terrible back pain again tonight. I think that the spinning is most probably not helping with the injury. Will skip next weeks class to see how my back is coping. My wife has been trying to get me to the dr's to checkout my back. Will make the call next week if I am going. I am just realy scared that I will be advised to stop training. I realy don't want to stop.

Did a big stock take today at work, meaning that I was on my feet the entire day, can feel it in my back. Had a very tasty chicken breast salad for lunch and a home made veggie and steak soup for dinner. looking in the mirror makes me feel realy proud of what I have achieved so far. I can somedays feel a bit impatient about my progress but then I sit back and realise that it's not even halfway to the end of the challenge and my results are already amazing.

Week5 check-in. My weight is 99.4Kg. That is correct, I have broken the 100kg mark. That was my goal got the week and I achieved it, really happy. i am also noticing that my pants are loosening up more and more. Played a round of golf today. Won't say the score as it was shocking. The positive thing was that my back held up pretty good. I am still trying to minimise bending etc . This seem to help with pain management. By the end of next week we will half way into the challenge.

Almost done with week 5. Can't believe how quickly time flies. We are almost halfway And I have seen realy good results so far. Must say its great to watch Max muscle TV and to look at the muscle up website. I have found that this keeps me motivated. Today in the gym I really concentrated on my form and making sure I reach muscle failure. By the way, I am under 100kg whoa! Great milestone for me. Will do my weekly weigh in on Sunday and post my actual weight then.

Went to gym over lunch today. My back is playing up again. It is taking allot out of me to stay focused as the pain just gets overwhelming sometimes. It's also a bit frustrating as I don't think I can push mysrlf a 100% on days like today. I am still very positive and am refusing to give up.

just had my night time shake before bed. I must say, I have never used protein before bed time nor have I used creatine before due to the potential risk to my kidney. I have given it a go with Max's producta as I feel that this is the best on the market and I am drinking allot of water to flush the entire time. I have not had a single sighn that there is any issues so I am very exited and relieved. These product definitely makes a huge difference, I can feel and start to see the results.

I think this is a realy good result under the circumstance. I had my back gym session today. My back is still tender but did't get worst or better. I am hopeful that it will heal quickly. Missed blogging yesterday...I had such a bad day! We're down the dumpster as they say. Went to the gym early yesterday morning to see how my lower back is coping... The answer is no good! I felt a bit de-railed. I did however videos myself doing some shoulder side raises ( out of focus unfortunately) ....bit like me yesterday. I am resting up today. Back still sore. Never the less, I feel mentally better than yesterday. I have decided, doesn't matter what happens I am NOT going to through in the towel after 2 weeks. I will work around the injury.

Just an update on my lower back issue. The pain is marginally better, but still very painful. Only did 20 on the stationary bike today. Will see how I feel tomorrow, really want to get back into it with the weight. Will adjust my program a bit to minimise impact on my back. I hope this will work. Its been a really tuff couple of days picking up the injury and Nadia( my lovely wife) being away on a business trip. This meant that I had to drop Kiara my 2 year old daughter off at daycare and pick her up after work each day. Do getting to the gym was a challenge. Luckily mommy is back tonight!

Just an update on my back pain. I took 4 nurefin pills after injuring myself earlier today. The pain is still very bad, can't bent forward. I am very concerned. I really hope a bit of rest tonight will help. Otherwise I might have to go to the dr. Not sure how I injured myself, I didn't go too heavy. I think I over extended in the downward part of the legg press rep iow I went over 90deg on my knees. I am already thinking what am I going to do with the challenge. I will sleep on it, maybe it's not that serious.
