Reason to start The Challenge

I'm about to turn 40 and feeling old and out of shape. After a knee operation late last year I have been trying to get back into shape but finding it hard to motivate. I've decided I'm going to do a fancy dress party for my 40th and go as wolverine, if Hugh can do it at 44, I can give it my best too. With Max's help I'm sure I'll get there.

What did you like most about The Challenge?

I really didn't know where to start, I just knew I wanted to make major changes. The challenge gave me the information, tools and advice I needed to achieve more than I could have imagined. The last 4 weeks blew me away with my results!

The forums and coaches were incredibly useful and really helped me understand that others were going through the same struggles I was experiencing.

Overall the challenge gave me the structure I needed and a huge amount of knowledge that will help me stay in shape for the rest of my life.

What was the hardest thing about your Challenge?

There were a few...
Having the rest of the family get sick and sleep deprived nights looking after a 6mth and 3yr old took its toll and added to the challenge.

Working around my knee injury's made both cardio and leg days that extra challenge, but there is always a way.

But, the hardest thing was the lack of carbs, calorie deficiency and mood swings it brought on. I'm normally very happy, but my body didn't enjoy the lack of carbs... I had a few choice words for other drivers not paying attention when alone in the car...

What impact has The Challenge had on your life?

I'm not a believer in diets or short term exercise programs. This challenge has provided a framework that is sustainable for my future (just not as hardcore).

My whole family are changing their diet to become more healthy, and the old saying is that your children will follow your example rather than your advice is so true. My 3yr old always tells me that he needs to do some exercise and now runs 4-5 laps around our local park with me (over 1.5km!!).

I'm also in the habit of taking lunch breaks now and making the time to go to the gym. I'd never take breaks in the past and could not believe the support of work colleagues have given me, even those making fun of me...

What would you say to people who are thinking of doing The Challenge?

I don't think there is anyone out there that should not try this challenge. You don't need to go too hard core, just do your best and be amazed at the results.

There is nothing to lose and so much to gain - health, energy, confidence, discipline, weight loss, increased muscle, posture, strength, productivity.... the list just goes on, why would anyone not give it a try?

Anything else you would like to tell us about your Challenge?

I'm not a big social media person and did not participate in the blogs or forums, even if I read almost all of them. I would definitely change this in the future.

I have to say that the challenge really polarised people around me. Many were supportive, but many were the opposite and thought I was mad. The important thing was that no matter what people though, it has made people think and lots of little changes have been made. I see people around me making healthier food choices, exercising more and work has introduced a number of subsidised fitness programs.

A good training partner makes all the difference, and I have to thank my fellow Wolverine, Mark Welch. He really pushed me to the next level and helped me achieve that bit extra that makes all the difference.

A supportive family was paramount, and my wife was the best I could have asked for. She has cooked up so many separate meal and cut up more chicken breast than any person should ever have to do. She changed her diet to help me and it really shows, she is looking hot! I can't thank her enough.

My sister in law took the photo's and did such a professional job.

The end goal for me was a fancy dress party, and it was awesome! I added some of the Wolverine pics, everyone thought the outfit was cool. I ended the challenge a bit early (my 40th was on the 13th Oct). Hugh looks even better now, so I guess I'll have to train harder to catch up to him!!!

Thanks to the Challenge Team, you have put together something special and helped me achieve something I was not sure I could really do. See you next year!
